Back in the early 1980's I saw a Blue Peter episode all about the hot springs of Rotorua on New Zealand's North Island and this has remained No 1 on bucket list ever since. Now 30 years on I am getting the chance to visit them.
Next week I will be flying out courtesy of APT (Australian Pacific Touring) and Cruise.co.uk to experience a shortened version of one of APT's land tours. I don't know the full itinerary as yet but I do know that I will get to visit Auckland, Rotorua. Christchurch. Mount Cook, Queenstown and Te Anau in the 9 days that I will be there.
Auckland is the largest city on the North Island and I only have a half day there so I imagine it will be a whirlwind city tour. Hopefully I'll get to see the harbour area as it is a major cruise port. Rotorua is home to boiling mud pools and hot springs and is one of the best places for experiencing the Maori culture.
Christchurch was devastated by the earthquake of 2011 so it will be interesting to see the effect that this has had on the city and Mount Cook will satisfy my hunger for snow, although it's a bit early in the season for snowboarding. Queenstown is the adrenaline capital of New Zealand and will offer me all sorts of appealing activities. However with my history of crashing quad bikes and smashing my face up whist trying to free run I am maybe better to be a spectator when I am far away from home. I do hope to try some white water rafting though if there is time.
This trip is going to be truly amazing and I am honoured to have been picked by my managers to be the member of staff going. I intend to take many photos and write several reports on the places that I visit, so that I can be as much help as possible to anyone considering a New Zealand land tour.
We are currently offering an APT land tour in October 2015 as part of our 'Gardens Themed' holiday programme. This is a 20 day tour including a 2 night stop en route in Singapore and the details can be viewed under this link.
