Yesterday
Viking River Cruises yesterday achieved a Guinness World Record by naming 14 ships in
just 24 hours.
and they were helped by TV baker Mary Berry who became the
Godmother of the Alsvin in Amsterdam.
The Guinness World Record involved the christening of 14
deluxe Longships in 3 cities across France, Germany and the Netherlands with
ceremonies held in Avignon, Rostock and Amsterdam. The previous record was
also held by Viking River Cruises who last year named 10 ships in one day.
Wendy Atkins-Smith, UK
Managing Director, Viking Cruises, said:
“It’s great to team up with Mary to launch our new
Longships and set another GUINNESS WORLD RECORD. As someone with a reputation
for embracing new challenges and reinventing herself all through life,
Mary embodies the Viking spirit of exploration – and also the spirit of the
curious, experienced travellers who sail with us all over the world"
Celebrating
the achievement, Mary Berry commented:
“It’s an honor, as well as an amazing experience, to
christen a vessel which I know will be home for Viking guests as they embark on
River Cruising throughout Europe."
"After spending some time on board the Alsvin, I can
see why people are so taken with river cruising. As someone who is fascinated
by travel, culture and food destinations you certainly get a sense of the
Viking spirit on board.”
Viking River Cruises now have a fleet of 50 river and
oceans cruise ships and this investment in new longboats just shows the growth
of the river cruise market. Over the past 5 years river cruising has seen an
increase in passenger numbers of 10% compared to 7% increase in ocean cruise
passengers. It really is a wonderful way to travel.
